Welcome To The Buddhist Butcher
4/20/20264 min read
A Buddhist who swears. A butcher who meditates. A blog to remind you life is hard... and somehow that's the good news.
Life is hard.
This is not a problem.
Welcome.
Let's get something straight from the start. This isn't a wellness blog. It's not a philosophy lecture. And it's definitely not a fucking safe space. There's no 10-step frameworks. No "morning routines of highly successful people." If you're looking for a warm hug and a guided meditation, Google's got your back, knock yourself out.
This is something different.
I spent 35 years as a butcher. Early mornings, cold rooms, hands that never quite got warm. And somewhere between the first cut and the last, I started paying attention to something nobody talks about much in wellness circles: real wisdom is messy. It smells. It doesn't come with a bloody soundtrack. It comes from showing up, day after day, to the complicated, unglamorous, occasionally beautiful work of being a human.
The name's a contradiction. I know. A Buddhist Butcher. That's the whole fucking point.
A butcher cuts cleanly. You separate what's useful from what isn't. You work with what's real, not what's ideal. Buddhism, at its core, does the same thing. Strip away the robes, the incense, and the Instagram aesthetics and what you're left with are some genuinely fucking handy tools, useful ideas about how to be a human.
Compassion.. the don't abandon your humanity kind.
Impermanence.. the understanding that everything changes, even the stuff that feels permanent.
And the Middle Way.. which is just a fancy way of saying: walk through complexity without becoming a fucking fanatic.
There's a teaching in Buddhism called Upaya... skillful means. Use the right tool for the right job.
A hammer is useful.
A hammer you can't put down obviously becomes a fucking problem.
That's what this place is about. Not turning you into a monk. Just giving you better tools... and maybe helping you put down the ones that are quietly doing damage.
And the good thing...
...you don't have to be a Buddhist.
You can be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Atheist, Agnostic, Alien or Leprechaun, or some nutter who just ended up here by accident.
This is just some honest conversations about being human.
No membership required.
Be assured, I'm not coming at this from a position of having it all figured out. I'm coming at it from the other direction entirely, and I've got the scars to prove it. Spinal injury that took everything I thought I knew about my body. Lost a partner. Made redundant. Homeless. Not as a metaphor. Actually fucking homeless.
And somewhere in the middle of all of the clusterfuck, I found that some of these ancient ways of thinking about the world actually hold up, especially when things start turning to shit. Not the sanitised, soft-lit, you've got this girlfriend... kind of wisdom.
The real kind. The kind that holds you up when you're on your knees.
That's what this place is built on.
As humans, we are being sorted into teams. And nobody even asked us if we wanted to fucking play!
You're either with us or against us.
You believe exactly what we believe, or you're an absolutre c#nt.
The enemy.
And we're being fed that outrage on purpose..
... because outrage keeps us clicking, scrolling, coming back for more. It's not an accident. It's a fucking business model. And it's making us stupider, crueller and more divided by the day.
But something's getting lost in all of this. Something really fucking important. The people you've written off. The ones you've decided are too broken, too wrong, too far gone. They're scared. They've lost things. They've made mistakes they carry around with them. You have too. So have I. We all have.
That's not a flaw in the human design...
... that's the whole fucking design!
And once we forget that.. once we let the algorithm talk us out of our own humanity, we've lost something that matters a fuckton more than being right ever will.
So what actually happens here?
It's a space to think differently about division, fear, struggle, and what it actually takes to find peace.
Not peace as denial.
Not "good vibes only."
Peace as clarity. Peace as staying human when everything in you wants to go hard, go numb, or go tribal.
You'll find writing here about the big stuff...
.. grief, identity, division, mental health, the outrage machine and how it works. Along with personal reflections that don't wrap up neatly, because life doesn't wrap up neatly. And occasionally something lighter, because contrary to what we get told, the world is not all doom and fucking gloom.
What you won't find is someone telling you what to think. That's not the deal. You're an adult. And I'm sure as shit not some guru. I'm just someone who's read a bit, lost a lot, and has some thoughts to share.
One last thing. And this one matters more than the rest. It's what ties the whole identity of this place together. And that is...
... kindness.
I know... it sounds more like something that's sown on a fucking throw cushion.
But the kindness I'm talking about has a spine.
It can disagree fiercely.
It can call out bullshit without flinching.
It can hold a hard line.
What it won't do is dehumanise.
What it won't do is punch down.
Because the moment your certainty costs you your compassion, you're not enlightened. You're not wise. You're just fucking loud.
Kindness isn't weakness. It's a strategy. And it's one that gets used around this place a lot.
So welcome.
Peace, Love, and Profanities
